Maharashtra, especially cities of Mumbai and Pune have been experiencing intensive and prolonged rains during the monsoons. IMD has given red warnings in both Mumbai and Pune because of very heavy rains and people are being asked to take precaution immediately. Cities are on high alert due to widespread flooding, heavy strain on infrastructures and frequent delays that have become the order of the day.

Reasons of Extreme Rainfall Events :

1. Bay of Bengal System enhanced Monsoonal Dynamics

A depression in the Bay of Bengal increased the power of monsoon circulation in western India, especially in Maharashtra, causing excessive rains that have been continuous in various districts.

2. Changing Climate pollution & Weather Patterns

Monsoons in recent years have been increasingly unstable Scientific analysis indicates that unusually heavy rainfall is increasing threefold in central India, partly because of the effects of climate change in disrupting the monsoon pattern Unseasonal delayed onset and rain concentration further increases the hazard.

3. Urban Infrastructure Bottlenecks

Over one-hundred-year-old drainage system in Mumbai is far inadequate to accommodate such rains. It was also designed to be used only 25 mm/hour during peak storms, creating a severe flooding problem that is further enhanced by encroachment, clogged outfalls and the absence of modernization.

4. Dam releases & flash flooding in Pune

In Pune, flash floods have developed as a result of intense rainfalls that have seen dams such as Khadakwasla and Nazare fill. The release of water by the authorities led to disastrous rise in rivers and flooding in the down stream.

Impacts :

Loss of Life or Damage: At least 21 people have been killed in the past few days across the state of Maharashtra in rain-related accidents

Transit-Disruption: In Mumbai, 409 mm of rain fell in 36 hours, disrupting road, rail and air travel on a massive scale. Train services were delayed or interrupted, flights were cancelled or delayed and commuters were stranded.

Closures & Evacuations - Schools in Lonavla shut till August 21; schools, government offices, advised to work from home in BMC. More than 1,100 persons were evacuated at Thane and Palghar.

Flooding in the State: Areas: Low lying areas such as Goregaon in vicinity of Oberoi Mall experienced waterlogging, which once again met with popular outrage as infrastructure failing being in focus. Rivers such as the Mithi have overflowed and evacuated the residence of about 400 people.

Farming injuries: Crops on lakhs of hectares were damaged or covered in water, particularly in Vidarbha, exacerbating rural livelihoods

Cautions and Prevention :

At the Governmental and The Civic Level

1.         Early Warnings & Alerts: The color coded messages (red/orange/yellow) have facilitated timely action. Two red zones on the cards today are Pune and Mumbai as also their surrounding districts

2.         Evacuations & Relief Teams: NDRF and SDRF are rescuing people stranded in flood-prone districts.

3.         Transport: Railways: Railroads are trying to maintain service. Officials are using additional buses, pumping water and clearing up drains in order to make the traffic conditions ameliorated

4.         School and Office Closures: Closures are announced and work-at-home policies are implemented to restrict movements of the people.

5.         Communication Campaigns: Media alerts invite people to remain indoors, not to travel and be guided by safety notices.

Conclusion :

The severe rain in Maharashtra in progress is a collection of shifting climate trends, escalating monsoon conditions and the old infrastructure. With Mumbai and Pune scrambling against unprecedented levels of water, co-ordinated response in terms of both meteorological preparedness, civic preparedness, and civil preparedness remains the best bet at curbing losses, and casualty. Preventive activities such as better drainage, better warning systems, and long-term urban planning will play key roles to create adaptive capacity to future monsoon challenges.
